Welcome to a guide to the Ancient Lost Cities Of Latin America Lost Cities Of Ancient America Ancient Lost Cities Of The Americas Throughout the ages, explorers have searched for lost cities of yore!

Welcome to Lost Cities.us

In our collective popular imagination lost cities are magical places of treasure and mystery!  But the history of the Americas is the collective history of North and South America, including Central America and the Caribbean. It begins with people migrating to these areas from Asia during the height of an Ice Age. These groups are generally believed to have been isolated from peoples of the "Old World" until the coming of Europeans in the 10th (the Vikings in North America) and 15th centuries (Spanish).

Cultural traits brought by the first immigrants later evolved and spawned such cultures as Iroquois on North America and Pirahă of South America. These cultures later developed into civilizations. In many cases, these cultures matured & expanded later  than their Eurasian counterparts. Cultures that may be considered advanced or civilized include: Cahokia, Zapotec, Toltecs, Olmec, Maya, Aztecs, Purepecha, Chimor, Anasazi, and the Inca.

Most lost cities are known sites that have been studied extensively by Archaeologists. Modern abandoned urban sites are referred to as ghost towns.

Lost cities generally fall into three broad categories: those whose disappearance has been so complete that no knowledge of the city existed until the time of its rediscovery and study, those whose location has been lost but whose memory has been retained in the context of myths and legends, and those whose existence and location have always been known, but which are no longer inhabited. The search for such lost cities by modern explorers and adventurers in the Americas eventually led to the development of the science of archaeology.      NEXT »
